Chris Great review, Chris.
I agree with a lot of your points, positive and negative here, but you found Cinera's image quality to be inferior to the Sony HMZ T2?
I have tried the Sony HMZ T1, T2 and T3 extensively at work, and I currently own Cinego and Cinera - Cinera blows Cinego and the Sony headsets out of the water on crispness and cleanness. I noticed a subtle textured fuzziness when viewing SBS 3D videos on Cinera, but 3D blu-rays using the frame packing method are far superior in image quality (the best 3D experience I have had to date)! In comparison, Cinego presents the same SBS 3D video with far more pixelation. The Sony headsets did present the motion more smoothly and with less flickering compared to Cinera and Cinego, so the motion interpolation and/or refresh rate must be better.
All versions of the Sony headsets use 720p screens, not 1080p, and they and Cinego (which actually is 1080p) have noticeable pixelation displaying 2D video compared to Cinera (which I have photographed through the lens with a DSLR and zoomed in to illustrate the difference). In fact, I've made a lot of the fact that what should appear as clean straight lines appears jagged when viewed with the Sony headsets and Cinego, due to the constraints of the resolution.
Where I am in complete agreement with you is the setup of the lenses and the screen being obscured/distorted. I also find the Sony and Cinego FOV more relaxing than Cinera for extended use, so I would love to be able to adjust it for comfort (at present, you can only do this digitally in the software media player settings).
That, in addition to the flickering motion effect that appears when there is any camera movement (due to the 30hz refresh rate? Cinera are apparently looking into this issue at the moment), are for me the two main issues I have with the picture quality. Others have pointed to better black levels on the OLED-based headsets as well. Perhaps, 2.5K or 4K OLED screens could improve these issues in a future release?
I'm also totally with you on the headmount criticisms and the future improvements list. Thanks for sharing your view.
